American Bittern
Copyright Barbara Samuelson 2001
The American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) large and heavy-bodied
with relatively long neck that tapers to a pointed bill. Relatively pointed
wings in flight compared to the Night-heron.
Bitterns are more normally heard rather than seen; their song is a deep
gulping oonk-a-lunk heard mostly at dusk. Photographed at Sacramento
National Wildlife Refuge, California.
 |
When alarmed the Bittern freezes with bill pointed
up. |
