This is the Chilkoot Lake (fresh water, glacier fed) and Chilkoot River just outside the city of Haines, Alaska. This image shot in July of 1997 shows plenty of snow on the mountains; there had been very little rain which would normally have melted most of the snow. We had gone to the Chilkoot hearing of a salmon run and the possibility of seeing some brown bears fishing for salmon. We did see plenty of fishermen, but they were all humanoid, not bears (Ursidae). The Department of Fish and Game did have a weir set up to count the salmon as they swam upstream.
