Greater Scaup

Copyright Barbara Samuelson 2003

Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) has a larger size and smoothly rounded head compared to the Lesser Scaup, along with a slightly larger bill with wider black tip. A green gloss can be noted on the male Greater Scaup's head. This is a female. They are found on large open lakes and bays and, being of the Family Podicipedidae, must take a running start on water for take-off.
