Elegant Terns
Copyright Barbara Samuelson 1998
The Elegant Tern (Sterna elegans) 16-17" In size, midway between
Royal and Forster's terns. Bill orange-yellow, with no black tip, and
proportionately more slender than the more orange bill of the Royal. Its
black crest is longer than the Royal tern. Voice: A nasal karreek,
or ka-zeek. It wanders irregularly north to San Francisco Bay.
Breeds near San Diego. These terns were protesting very loudly as
the last one tried to land on the jetty in Alameda, California.
